In the consultancy industry, the pros and cons of working from home have always been balanced to suit both the employer and the employee. on the other hand, reaps its rewards in allowing employees to work from home leading to a good work-life balance, however, this has some high cost to the employer as they have to acquire technology to support their employees to work from home which does not come cheap.
Economic trends, financial fluctuations, acquisitions, mergers, etc can all come into play as to whether or not it will be profitable for employers to determine the level and rate at which their employees can work from home. What about when business situations and economic forecasts coupled with national policies are so gloomy that the majority of industry workers are confined to their homes? Yes, in the case of a war or a pandemic like COVID-19.
In March alone, due to uncertainties, thousands of employees across the world have been asked to work from home.
That said, it may not be an easy accomplishment for manufacturing firms and other hardcore industries. For the consultancy firms, that may bring no serious stress on revenues and turnover, at least for a certain period since a big chunk of their clients lies within non-consultancy firms.

That said, it may not be an easy accomplishment for manufacturing firms, Hospitals, Restaurants and other hardcore industries to pull off however for consultancy firms, getting employees to work from home may not bring any serious decline in revenues and profits, at least for a certain period since a big chunk of clients and the work consultancy firms provide to their clients can usually be done remotely away from Client sites.
On March 3, Twitter asked its employees to work from home to help reduce and eventually help to stop the spread of the coronavirus. On March 11, Google also directed 100,000 of its staff to work from home. Facebook, Amazon and other giants have issued various kinds of ‘work-from-home orders’. These are really strange times!
According to The Boston Herald (March 29, 2020), ‘As Americans start another week working from home, business experts say it’s a “new normal” that will last after the coronavirus is subdued — and workers say they like that’… It goes on to say that ‘companies across the U.S. and indeed the world have had to quickly ramp up work-from-home policies this month as social distancing measures shuttered traditional workplaces to slow the spread of the virus’.
According to SHRM (March 21, 2020), Microsoft made a choice to send tens of thousands of its employees to work from home and this may have been simplified by employees’ familiarity with the company’s own Microsoft Teams, a widely used suite of products that ties together video conferencing capabilities and other software to make it easier for workers to share files and work together, even when they are thousands of miles apart.
We must, therefore, begin to acknowledge that the global pandemic of COVID-19 is already reshaping the already known traditional methods and ethics of working from home. Perhaps, the smart IT experts, APP developers, Software Engineers, Web Designers, and Developers are already creating better and more suitable communication software and tools that will not only blow our minds but incredibly boost productivity and further improve work efficiency.
As Consultants, this is the best time to reshape the mind, learn new tools and get mentally and physically equipped for a change.
